Amy Prince knows how Heartbreak Hill got its moniker.
“That hill and the mile or two after are the most challenging parts of the marathon,” said Prince, supervisor of the Exercise Stress Testing Lab at BWH. “After that, once you can see the Citgo sign, you know you’re close to the finish.”
Prince was one of 135 members—including 26 BWHers—of Team Brigham braving the fierce winds and rain to run the 111th Boston Marathon on Monday. The team joined scores of runners from all over the world as they began in Hopkinton, raced up and over Heartbreak Hill and, 26.2 miles later, crossed the finish line in Copley Square.
“Miraculously, the rain stopped right before the start, and there was only a little rain throughout the race,” Adam Rosendorff, MD, chief resident of Clinical Pathology, said. “But it was very cold at the end and the wind really picked up.”
Despite the inclement weather, the team persevered, keeping in mind the good cause they were running to support: BWH’s community health programs.
“Neither rain, nor cold temperatures, nor high winds could keep this group of mighty marathoners from their destination - 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish line in Boston,” said Suzanne Leidel, of Development, the team’s official “den mother.” “The community health programs at BWH owe a debt of gratitude to these dedicated individuals who made and kept their commitment on a day when many could have easily turned away and gone home. I am so very proud of every member of Team Brigham 2007.”
“It was an honor to run,” said Rosendorff, who was back at work the next day. “It was great to run for such a worthy cause, and one I really believe in.”
The team estimates that it has raised more than $350,000, but the deadline isn’t until May 31. There’s still time to help the team meet its goal of $500,000 to support BWH’s community health programs.
